Baby Signing

Your baby has a lot to say but cannot speak. Because their motor control develops sooner than speech, they use hand gestures to communicate by pulling, waving etc. Sign language is a organized set of gestures that you and your baby can use to understand each other. Being able to communicate their needs, will boost your baby’s confidence and self-esteem, and will nurture your relationship and bonding as frustrations and tantrums melt away.

Signing communication can start early as 2 months as seen in this video. I have had babies as young as 4.5 months come to class and start signing after they complete a monthly session. Typically, babies are usually 6 – 15 months when they join. And babies may also attend 2 -3 monthly sessions before they start signing because they have a need to communicate (they know the signs and can understand the signs). For example, little Kylie came to many classes and only signed milk on the day that her mother had delayed the feeding to go to the airport to pick up her uncle!

Baby Signing is based on American Sign Language and focus on words that are important to babies – eating, drinking, sleeping, potty, family, and feelings.  

Month 1: Eating, Drink;  Potty, Hurt, Pets, Family
Month 2: Clothing, Play, Travel, Nice Words, Bedtime
Month 3: Day & Night, Weather Outside, Nature
Month 4:  Relationships, Emotions, Food

Everyone in your family is welcome to join in the singing, signing and games! We do this as a group because babies can learn from each other, and caregivers have each other’s support and encouragement.
