Honest Expression Workshop

What to expect?

Experience being able to ask for what you need and get your needs met.

This 1 month-long workshop & mentorship  focuses on identifying and naming the NEEDS that underlie your behaviors and actions. We explore this in a small-group, 2-hour workshop and continue over the month with weekly reflections on your day-to-day application of these skills.

Modern society conditioned us to minimize individual needs and/or conform needs to what is socially “normal”; all other needs are judged and criticized.

We learned to prioritize the needs of those who wield power and authority in our lives as children with our parent.  This was reinforced by our teachers and continues to be reinforced by community leaders, employers, etc.

Here, you can recover your autonomy and sovereignty so that you can tend to your needs. Then, you can offer the same to those around us.

Each of our needs must be heard and honored for us all to live full lives.

Knowledge and Skills

Learning to accurately identify needs through Reflective Listening Partnership.

We extend the practice of deep listening to our listening partners to discern between observations, feelings, needs, and requests from our listening partners.

Next, we reflect these back to our partners by paraphrasing what we have understood.

Then, they confirm if this was accurate. We stay with empathy and allow others the opportunity to fully express themselves.

Only when we have ascertained that we truly understand their needs, then there can be a discussion of possible solutions IF this is requested.

The practice of listening and reflecting back to our listening partners helps us to discern between our needs, wants, and obligations and allows us to be self-reflective so that we can identify our needs and be confident in expressing them.

Feedback

What have you been able to bring into your everyday life that has been positive ? Active listening, listening without judgement and response, and also some of the reflective listening mainly where I repeat what I THINK I heard to confirm I understood what was said.

I have used what I learnt here nearly everyday ! I do it when I talk to friends and family, I do it when I text or email, I use it professionally. I’m still practicing, but it changed the way I think about the way people communicate. … it made my days allot easier to deal with and my worries less.

What did you learn from this workshop?   I realized that silence can be more valuable and more helpful than words. The experience allowed me to value a listening. nonjudgmental ear. This form of communication allows the person to vent, feel heard and decrease their level of stress.
